Barbara B. Lockee is Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Professor of Instructional Design & Technology in the School of Education at Virginia Tech. Her scholarship centers on instructional design, distance/online learning, and faculty/professional development, with a focus on quality in technology‑mediated learning. She has served as Past President of AECT and currently serves as Vice President for Education of IAFOR. She earned a BA (1986) and MA (1991) from Appalachian State University and a PhD (1996) from Virginia Tech.

Reflecting on rapid pivots to remote instruction during COVID‑19, the article distinguishes emergency responses from well‑designed online learning and argues that the innovations, investments, and practices developed during the pandemic could permanently influence how education is delivered. It highlights the need for intentional design, infrastructure, and support ecosystems for sustainable online education beyond crisis conditions.
